I tried the grille covering thing before I put in the new core.. Now this is a modern '89 GMC with only idiot lights, so I couldn't check gages.. Wouldn't you know I could get the truck to boil over but was still cold inside the truck.

That heater core will look brand spankin new from the outside.. but cut it apart and you'll find blockage or corrosion on the inside of the tubes.

Beleive me, I tried everything before I replaced the core. Flushing, direct flushing, cleaners, etc, etc....
I will try swapping the hoses this time to see if it will self clean. I can't figure out where the crud is coming from as it is a fairly new motor and radiator, and the hoses are fine, too. You don't want a marginal cooling system on a plow truck. You also don't want a cold heater. Or one that blows hot for a sec, then the core cools right down. Takes all the fun out of mailbox hunting! (Just kidding, I don't hit mailboxes wioth the plow, normally..)
