With out a doubt, you didn't (or can't) put the rotor button on backwards?

It does sound like you may have sheared the pin that holds the gear in place. For kicks, you can just re-wire the plug wires so number one is at number one. Then time accordingly. It really doesn't matter where 1 position is as long as you are actually at TDC or there abouts. Remember which way the rotor button turns and plug in. CW or CCW. If you did shear the gear it will probably start, then it might fall off and bounce around down there until it breaks something or the engine just stops.
