The aftermarket makes it's money on that X% of customers that don't or won't comparison shop, and end up paying the price - literally. I guarantee that for every post you see on thse boards claiming that such and such dealer hosed someone on parts, at least one reader makes up their mind that the dealers will always be higher. Most of us know that is completely untrue, but the aftermarket just gained another customer. Not all aftermarket businesses are out to gouge people, but some clearly are. I can't believe how many posts I've seen wondering where to find this part or that part by guys that haven't even considered the dealership they drive right past on a daily basis. Sure, they may not have the part, and it may be higher priced, but you're sure not going to know until you ask. It doesn't matter where you buy parts, this hobby is never going to be "cheap", but some people spend far more money than they need to. A customer recently stopped by with his unstyled JD "B" that he had "professionally" restored. He went on and on about how good the paint job was, how much it cost him and so forth. I didn't have the heart to tell him that there was still grease on the underside of the engine block that had been painted over. The tractor looks great to the untrained eye at 15 feet. When you get a little closer, you can see that he got taken to the cleaners. He's happy, and I didn't write the check, but I still hate to see a guy get shafted on a deal like that. I'm no painting expert, but I could have done a better job and charged him less to do it. Buyer beware........

Today's Featured Article - New Hitches For Your Old Tractor - by Chris Pratt. For this article, we are going to make the irrational and unlikely assumption that you purchased an older tractor that is in tip top shape and needs no immediate repairs other than an oil change and a good bath. To the newcomer planning to restore the machine, this means you have everything you need for the moment (something to sit in the shop and just look at for awhile while you read the books). To the newcomer that wants to get out and use the machine for field work, you may have already hit a major roadblock. That is the dreaded "proprietary hitch". With the exception of the ...
