Adjusting a generator regulator is almost a lost art. The field relay is the one that sets voltage output. it is the one with small guage wire in the coil and normally closed contacts. To increase voltage you turn the screw to increase spring pressure on the contact arm. When you get the voltage close to the 9.5 volts needed for the 8V battery,you should install the regulator cover and let it heat up running for a few min. The magnetic field flowing through the steel regulator cover and the temperature of the internal parts will have an effect on the voltage setting. The cutout relay has heavy wire in the coil and the big normally open contacts,so is easy to spot. Most likley it will not have to be adjusted as long as the 8 volts from the battery is not enough to keep the cutout contacts closed when you stop the engine. Good luck and be very carefull not to short the regulator relays with the cover when you remove/install it.
