Darn Alternator problems again..need advice

I have a two wire alternator. It checked good on the bench and was installed. I had the output go to the amp meter and on to the battery terminal. I have a 12v hot lead coming from the ignition switch to the left terminal.(looking from the rear of the alternator toward the front pulley.) When I tried it, no charge. I then looked somewhere in the archives and read that you need to hook up a hot lead to the right terminal also. I did this and it worked great. Charged at about 30 amps and then went down to about ten amps as the battery took the charge. It worked that one time and then it quit working. I now have a brand new alternator of the same type. I am hesitant to connect a hot lead to the right terminal, for fear of damaging a new alternator. So i cranked it with just the hot lead on the left terminal hooked up and it's not charging also. What is the straight story on hooking up the alternaor? I would very much appreciate advice from someone who knows. Thanks!
