You are probably thinking about a Sherman transmission. They were usually dealer installed and fit between the clutch and transmission. You could buy them in Overdrive/Direct, Underdrive/Direct and Over/direct/under.
They used them from the early 9Ns all the way through the Hundred series.
Keep in mind that if you were hoping to slow your Ford down for something like rototilling the Sherman also reduced the PTO speed since it reduces the rpm of the input shaft both to the tranny AND pto.
