First of all you aint buttin in.
That's how we all got started here.
It's kind of late in the season now for most shows
but keep checking the link at the left of this page for the show guide. I just looked at TX and there were 20 shows listed for 2002.
I agree that some of them hot rodders can be pretty rough. Foul language, drinking and the like.
You'll find tractor folks to be a little milder. Maybe because they're often older and already done their share of carousing.
Every state has their tractor events. Lot of swap meets etc in spring and early summer and lots of meets and threshing shows as the summer wanes.
A lot of shows have permanent sites with buildings and museum type displays.
You'll see a lot of women and families there.
Another way to get started is to hit a few antique farm auctions. Talk to some of the tractor folks there and ask about some local shows. You'll be able to get an idea "what color" of tractor you like the best at auctions too.
It's kind of funny but after when you get to watch an old steam tractor roll by in a parade and notice how incredibly Quiet they are it will kind of make you wonder if some of the noise that comes from all those hopped up, rodded up cars isn't a little superflous.
Good luck
