I'll disagree. After rereading all the posts, I think we need to agree on some definitions. About the transmission, he didn't say he had a hi/lo, what he said was (quote): "The shifter sits between your legs and has 3 levels of 2 gears each." Which to me is a way of describing the unusual shift pattern on a Ford 5 speed. Three levels, 2 gears each. First level=3rd and reverse. Second level=1st and 2nd. Third level=4th and 5th. Now as to live pto. In his original post he never said live pto (which I assumed). He said "live power". I've heard that term used to describe both live hydraulics (which the 850 has) and/or live pto (which the 850 does NOT have). So after reading all the info (twice) I still lean toward it being what the numbers say it is....a 1955 Ford 850 built in May or June. Also, if it had a hi/lo, it would also rule out an 850 as the Sherman aux trannies will not fit in front of a 5 speed.

Jon called me to help him discover why his tractor wouldn't start
