I keep all of my tires continually packed with a solution of dirt with water mixed in. I find they are still sorta black on the sides, but more of a brownish on the tread. Also, the dirt/water mixture I use seems to plug and fill all the cracks, so my tires are almost as smooth as racing slicks. Unfortunately, when using road gear on a paved highway, the protective coating becomes dislodged. Luckily, by the time I'm at the end of the driveway, the protective coating has been re-applied. I've found this to be about average for all of our wheeled equipment, ever since we switched from steel wheels after WW2.
