In the beginning, tractors were strictly functional. Looks were of now importance. Then in the late 30's a concept of "industrial design" started to take hold. Several tractor makers (notably John Deere and Farmall) started to devote design resources to make their tractors look nicer. For a few years they offered the same tractor in the old style (ugly....now known as "unstyled") or the new style....now known as styled. I had one old timer refer to an unstyled JD as a "hard nose". That's the only time I've heard that term. I could be mistaken but my memory tells me I've read that Raymond Loewy was responsible for the design of the styled Farmalls. He's the same designer that is responsible for the still-beautiful '53 Studebaker.
