I can't hear high pitch sounds, probably due to operating crawler tractors on the farm. Our soil was sticky clay that stuck to the tracks and reduced the high-pitched squeaks quite a bit. When the company sent me to Montana on assignment in the 60's, I met 40-year-old farmers that were nearly deaf from operating crawlers in dry soil with high levels of track noises. It's the extended duration of the sound levels that will damage a person's hearing. Now I wear ear protection in the woodworking shop if the duration is going to be over 5 minutes.
