If you have stumps of any real size, by all means get a tracked excavator in to do the job. They take stump and roots at the same time,roll them around to get the earth off,then you can burn them when dried out. Up here , an excavator with operator will cost you $70/hr.and the production will amaze you. Safe , clean , cheap , no repairs and you'll never get regrowth.
