If it's a John Deere 50 or late styled John Deere A, I think you will find it on a small plate attached to the crankcase just in front of and above the belt pulley/clutch. If it's something else, you may find the serial number somewhere else. If it's an International A or B, look under the seat. It's more likely than not something else, though, so you'll probably find it somewhere else.
