for old gas tanks, i'd use KREM (cream) it is a 3 step process. basicly muratic acid, to eat the rust, you mix it with hot water. then wash the inside out with dry gas. after doing that letting it dry alittle on the inside. you use the KREM coating. roll the tank around coating every noock and cranny, and repeating the coating process about 3 times. Gas tank will never rust again and there is no none chemical that will eat away at the KREM, so once its in there..its there for good....maybe able to pick it up at Motor Cycle shops...
