This is actually a discussion I have had with students (high school and college) off and on over the years. "Large" really does vary according to crop and area of the country. Our County Cattlemen's Association tours farms and ranches all over the US and Canada ever year (been in all 48 CONUS and 4 Western Canadian Provinces). To me "large" is a term that applies when the size of the operation becomes such that the owner no longer spends the majority of his time providing the labor, instead he spends his time as a resource manager. Some samples of what I call "large": 10,000 acre ranch in SD, 35,000 acre ranch NV, 150 acre vinyard CA, 3000 acre corn in corn belt, 40 acre organic produce NJ, 800 hay and tobacco KY, 1000 cow dairy FL. Also a huge variablity in who owns the land. A lot of places in the west US Gov leases the grazing land to the rancher, midwest a lot rented from other landlords, he in the Southeast if I farm it I own it. Generally speaking if the crop calls for 100's of thousands of $$ in equipment the farmer will own less of the land. A sample "snapshot" of my farm (I'm a large 'part-timer'): family business (me and my retired father). We have 500 owned acres we actively farm and 200 in acres in two farms 120 miles which we cash rent out. Our crops are cash hay (8000 squares, 500 round plus 500 round and 2000 squares to feed), beef cattle (100 momma cows), horses (55 brood mares), and tobacco (8 acres). I rent an additional 120 acres of pasture for horses. Our $$ is tied up in land, not equipment. My most expensive machine is a used 85 hp tractor I bought for $14,000. Cattle are sold through the local auction market, horses and most hay private sale (few horses auction), some hay is sold on contract to horse and dairy farms. Tobacco is sold through regulated quota system. In some parts of the US I would be a hobby farmer and in some I would be huge.
