I don't know about oiling and whether it makes them last longer or not, however I do know from experience that it sure makes it a lot easier to remove them. I've had a couple of 1940 MH tractors where that coupling had never been lubed very much and tring to remove it was a job in itself. They will just freeqe up in the circle of the sprockets and you have to really pry and work at them to get them loose before removal. Plus getting out the connecting link wasn't too much fun either.
