For that matter, you can buy beef cheaper than raise your own. I sell 100 head of calves a year but if I kill a beef it costs me the $550.00 that the calf would bring, 100 days of feed to fatten him up (10#/day would be 1000# at 150/ton ($75.00)). Then processing ($.30/pound on say a 600# yield out of a 900# carcass) puts the total to $805 for 600# of meat. Out of that are a lot of roasts, ox tail, heart, and a few steak cuts that I don't care for. By shopping the sales you can get whole ribeyes or sirloins for about $2.69, round steaks for 1.99, and ground chuck for .99. That's the cuts we prefer so it's cheaper to sell calves and buy what we want.
