My metal box was also destroyed. I put up one of those flexible plastic boxes. It bounces back to shape. I'm happy with it. The base for my mail box extends over the ditch , about 12-15 feet. If the box gets hit , it is able to swing out of the way. Also nice for snow plowing. When plowing snow , the plow goes under the mail box.
