Try using compressed air. Less messy and less dangerous than using hydraulic pressure. Be careful! Even with just a 150 psi they can get wild. I don't like to use heat, too much danger of warping something expensive. Better yet take it to a fluid power shop (I quit repairing my own after I did one 3 times and found the gland was worn beyond tolerance). They can check for wear and tolerances of the gland and rod. Usually costs me just under $100 for a little bigger loader cylinder than you are describing, including the seals. Email me and I can give you some #'s of a couple of national companies I use.
