I built a car hauler a few years back and used 6000 lb axles. Never did get brakes wired up. I heard tires would wear fast. Mine didn't. Course only used it occasionally, not a regular use. Had it that way for 5yrs. Changed to regular trailer axles for 15" tires, still never wired brakes and then sold trailer, (stupid idea!) I have heard not to use open backing plates, mine didn't have those, I have lately heard of the Non-legal use on road story, and I was told to buy Low-boy tires in 14.5 to replace. One thing I did is cut and narrow mine. They have a built in arch to them and when I used a pipe over them, I lifted it in middle as it didn't fit tight and rewelded the arch back in. I really think the arch is BS!
Tractor Supply stores have a lot of trailer parts, axles too, but not as wide as I would want. Lots'of places on-line to get parts/catalogs from. AND, axles don't really cost that much new, so why not?
