Spark Plugs

I have a Cockshutt 30 with a motor in it that has been overhauled with alum. pistons. It has a very poor spark plug life. I was wondering if anyone has an answer as to weather the use of fabric covered steel wires could be my problem? Would carbon wire make a difference? Jerry, Michigan
