Jack, this question came up last year. I consulted with a friend who is a nationally recognized wood finishing expert, Michael Dresdner, about this. He suggested a couple of coats of Spar Varnish, as used on boats, etc. for its good water, solvent, heat and stain resistance with fair scratch resistance.He did not recommend using linseed, tung, or Danish oil, for example, becuase of poor water, scratch and stain resistance, as well as vunlnerability to solvents.Another suggestion might be a good deck sealer. The best cost more!
