Okay, I'm gonna be un-popular for saying this, but they work fine! If you're restoring a tractor for show, stay with 6 volts. The 6 volt system WILL work fine if well-maintained and trying to twist something close to a stock engine in decent weather. My tractors have high-compression pistons and sometimes need to start when it's very cold. I've run 8 volt batteries in my Farmall M and SM for over 20 years with no problems. The 8-volt battery spins them much better. Sometimes you don't even have to tweak the regulator for the 8 volt to give satisfactory performance. (That statement's probably gonna bring some rebuttal!) One of my winter projects is likely to be a 12-volt conversion for even more reliability. Keep in mind that if you DO change to 8 volts, charging the battery with a battery charger becomes an entirely new adventure, as most chargers do not have an 8-volt setting.
