24 volt winch

I came acrossed a military surplus 24 volt winch that i would like to use on my 12 volt truck.Does anyone know if it will hurt anything to just hook it up and use it that way?I suspect that it might be slower operating,but a winch doesn't have to be fast. thanks,Jeff
