There is no way to use a "step-up transformer" to get 12volts from a 6volt system. Transformers only work on AC current. You might be able to get a six to twelve volt converter which uses a handful of electronics to change the voltage. My suggestion is to check with some tractor bone-yards, see if they have some old used 6volt units. Ignition noise is a fact of life. Car manufacturers use resistor plugs, resistor ignigion wires, and shield the engine with metal hoods to try to supress the noise, as well as strategically placed chokes and capacitors in the ignition system, as well as possibly in the electrical system. Tractors do not have this, and may be difficult to retrofit. Have you considered changing the electrical system to 12volts? You will probably get better starting, and performance. Now might be the time. Most tractors lend themselves to a fairly easy conversion. There are several excellent articles posted on this netsite on this topic.
