I have a 99 F250SD with electronic hubs.
1. You can use in the auto or manual mode on front axles. For manual, you turn to turn the front hub to lock on each tire.
2. You need to turn them on, I think, at least 1/week to make sure they stay working. I live in upstate New York and we get cold weather sometimes.
3. I like the automatic hubs in nasty weather or on the road doing under 50 mph and you can turn them on.
