Check out the "Towing and Hauling" board on thedieselstop.com (formerly Ford-Diesel.com until the !@$%& lawyers at Ford decided this was an illegal use of their trademark). You'll find lots of useful info. Meanwhile, your truck probably has a GCWR of 20,000 lb (that includes truck, occupants, trailer and contents). Take your truck/trailer combo to the local truck scales loaded with all the gear and people you would normally take except the load on the trailer. You might be surprised how little that leaves for payload(maybe 7k or less)...
