John Ne.: It appears that the big change to "glowplug" model airplane engines back in the late 1940's was a spinoff of the bulb engine. Model engines still use a glow plug element of platinum to start them. They use methnol and caster oil, or similar, as the fuel. The platinum reacts with methanol to produce heat which keeps the platinum element red hot while the engine is running. THis red hot element and the compression fires off the fuel. Very simple and very light weigth. The current model engines from Japan are fantastic compaired to 50 years ago. Mult cylindel radial engines can cost over $1000. But hey, it's a hobby like tractors so cost is NOT always factored in. I've seen old bulb engines befor but never stoped to even read about how they worked. Always something new on these forums.
