Cousins 1949 8n 6 volt ignition coil getting hot

My cousin claims his 1949 8n ford tractor with original 6 volt system has a problem with the ignition coil overheating after running the tractor for about 1 hour. He says the tractor starts missing and the coil is hot. I checked the voltage at the coil and it's 2.5 volts with points closed and 6.3 volt with the points open. That looks good to me. It has the front mounted distributor with coil mounted on top of the distributor. I have not checked the voltage at the coil once the tractor starts running poorly and the coil is hot. Any ideas on what could make the coil overheat?
