I certainly won't argue with Kettering or the like, but something else to consider. The steels and manufacturing processes used years ago are quite different than today. While although the TEL was put in to raise octane, the added benefit of the cushioning effect of the lead helped to prolong the life of those engines. Modern technology has allowed for harder and stronger steels and alloys. These are better equipped to handle the lack of TEL in so far as the effects it had on valve seats and the like. So, the question is, does modern leadless gasonlines harm old engines? I'd say no, they don't, but they don't help either. Obviously it is OK as there are still many, many old tractors about still running happily on modern gasoline, and I suspect they will continue to do so for many more years. If you maintain your equipment, and change the oil and filters at regular intervals as specified (or even more often), I suspect the engines will still be running when the rest of the tractor is ready for the grave yard.
