sears garden tractor

I have a 18 hp sears garden tractor. Model 757.242391 and was replacing the positive battery cable from the battery to the selonoid. As soon as I touch the cable to the selonoid the tractor starts with the key in the off position. There is a small red wire that comes from the ignition switch that is near the seloniod. Where do I attach that wire? Is there something else that might be wrong.
Before I went to replace the cable the tractor would not start.
