Rear end oil for 46 A

I have a 1946 A that does a fair amount of hard work. The manual says to run 140 wieght oil in the rear end. Can I run the 80-90 or 85-140 in it instead? Is the 140 too thick? Is this ok for short jobs in the winter? I want to use the best oil I can, oil is cheap insurance!
