One more thing is that a short belt transmits power pulses from the engine and "jerks" the driven machinery. The longer belt makes the driven pulley run more smoothly and evenly. Some belt applications could not use full engine speed and with a 2 cylinder JD at lower speeds, the belt would be somewhat jerky. I have some 2 cyl JD's and am just making an accurate observation, not a criticism. In every application, the long belt adds some flywheel action also due to the moving mass.
