all coils were 6 volt prior to the late 1950's. after that you could use an external resistor to convert an older 6 volt coil to 12 volt, or you could get a "new" 12 volt coil, which is a 6 volt winding with an "internal resistor" so it will work with 12 volts. so yes, there is a difference, if it has the internal resistor or not.
