Top-link length?

Is there a standard length for the top-link on a category 1 3pt hitch? I bought a tractor which included a lifting boom that attaches to the 3pt, but I need it to lift things a bit higher. The guy who sold me the tractor said it would lift higher if I switched to a shorter top-link, but I can't find one shorter than the 18 inch minimum length of the one I already have. Is there some geometric reason why top-links don't come in many different lengths?
