see if there is a pos.or neg.stamped on the base of the regulator.also if the old battery cables are still on the tractor,then try to see which cable fits which post,since they are differant sizes.if it has an alternator on it is probably neg ground,and you could burn up the alt. if it is set up backwards.im not sure,but i think if you hook up a gen.backwards it just wont charge.it would also help if you would specify what tractor your working on.
