It's true that a good 6 volt system will start a well-maintained M under most conditons. It's also true that one that has high compression pistons isn't going to turn over very well when it's started warm, let alone cold. I've run 8-volt batteries in my M and SM for about 25 years with no problems. The regulator can be tweaked up a little if the charging rate isn't enough. Keep the connections clean and use heavy cables, regardless of which battery you have.

Charging an 8-volt with a battery charger is a mine-field if you don't know what you're doing. Using a 12-volt charger is not a good idea, as it will be rough on the charger as well as the battery. Batteries CAN and DO explode occasionally. A 6-volt charger is a better bet, though it will charge more slowly than you may expect.
