I have seen it done on flat head engines, don't see what the difference would be. Probably isn't the best idea,but it would probaly work, if the gasket is in good shape. The idea of paint seems like a good one. Used to do that on metal head gaskets. I suppose some gasket sealer could be applied in a thin coat to the edges where sealing is critical too.
