How about a tie breaker. The old head gasket has imprints of the head and block or sleeves from the surface grinding when the parts were machined. When the head was set on the block and the bolts put in it was bolted in that position. Then you ran the engine a while and retorqued the headbolts. The engine was run with the head in that position for many hours. The head could have been shifted on the headbolts before torquing. So, for one reason the head and block won't line up with the gasket. A second reason is because the gasket was compressed with the torque to seal the compression, oil, and water and keep them separate. You can take a chance, but you may have to replace later, in the middle of field work, or sometime when it is really inconvenient to replace it. When the head is off is the most convenient time to replace the gasket. It is better to try to save on something not critical, or easily replaced.
