I agree with you that the best solution is to go ahead and use what you've got. It would probably cost a lot more (for both you and the builder) than it's worth to get back to the attic walkout you wanted. I do agree with DWP that the lender is somewhat inept. In my experience (30 years in construction), most lenders do not have the expertise to evaluate plans, or to tell if construction is proceeding according to plans/specs. That's why they hire out inspections and plan evaluations to firms like mine. The builder is caught in bind between your interests and his need to make money. Of course, like you or me, his money is more important to him. As I said in my response to DWP, the best thing to do is reach a mutually satisfactory agreement on how to proceed.
