I'm 42 years old. Watching the ceremonies of 9-11 today got me to thinking about how our nation survives through the tough times and about different symbols of our endurance as a nation and a people. It made me think about my tractor (a 1940 Farmall H). Although it is not the old family tractor, I know it was working a field here in Texas when the word of Pearl Harbor reached the family farm in Del Rio TX where my dad, as a 22 year old country boy, left his small corner of the world and joined the Navy to help right that terrible wrong. Now that tractor sits in my shed, less than 50 miles from where it was on that first "Day of Infamy". It still works the land with a mower and a disk. It witnessed our second "Day of Infamy" on 9-11-01. I'm proud to be the caretaker of such a symbol of America. It has endured beyond those who first used it to work the land and will endure after I'm gone. I fear it will be a silent witness to more "Days of Infamy" in the years and decades to come, yet I know it and our country will survive those days to come. I'm proud to take care of such a symbol. I'm proud of my ancestors who defended the country when called upon. I'm proud to be a police officer to help where I can today, and I'm proud of all of you that maintain our symbols of endurance, our old tractors. God bless America. Never Forget!
