Pure speculation on my part, but I suspect that the cavitation when you had the intake restriction could have eroded, thus weakened, the gear, then when you removed the intake filter, the pump started pumping at full capacity, thus loading the gear more, causing the weakened part to break. Then again, I could be all wrong.
