Insure you are using motor oil rated for your engine, regular automotive oil is not good enough for a diesel engine. White smoke in cold weather from a diesel engine indicates unburned fuel due to cold combustion chamber temperature. To check for a coolant leak, remove the radiator cap and inspect for bubbles rising, since a diesel engine has little/no vacumn, it can't suck in coolant, and the high compression will blow back into the coolant system if there's a leak.
