The other guys are on the right track and I agree with them, but will give a couple reasons why we use weights and duals.

Duals because a tractor over 100 horsepower (or even less) will have excessive wheel spin when pulling a heavy load, also without the duals your tires will wear faster from the slippage. Another reason for duals: they ride really nice in rough fields - we bale with our 2590 Case and leave the duals on because it rides so much smoother with them and doesn't rock back and forth like a tractor without duals. That would be another reason: stability. Duals also add flotation, in the eastern part of ND where it is muddy all the time they have triples on the rear of their FWD tractors and duals on the front for flotation.

Both front and rear weights help with traction. Rear weights help put more pressure on the rear wheels so they won't spin. The front weights help with turning traction - I hate riding the brakes on every corner. The only mounted implement we use is a snowblower so weights are useful up front even without pulling mounted implements.
