If you're looking for a simple/small project, I remember when I was in shop class I made a couple of hammers. One was a riveting hammer, square on one end and tapered like a chisel on the other end, steel head. Knurl the handle if you have a lathe with a knurling attachment.

A more useful tool is a brass hammer, I used a round piece of brass about 1" by 4" for the head and made the handle on the lathe (yeah, the knurling attachment was pretty cool), if you don't have the knurling attachment you can just cut some grooves or something in it. I graduated in '78 and still use the brass hammer, I'm not sure what ever happened to the riveting hammer...
