We built engine hoists (cherry picker) in our high school shop class. If your class involves welding, that might be a good project, as it involves several different skills - welding, torch work, drilling, cut-off sawing, grinding and so on. For about the same money as a cheap one from a parts house, you can build a much better quality hoist. Plus, you'll end up with something pretty useful when you're done. My only regret was that I was so busy building them for others, that I didn't get a chance to build one for myself.
