Actually, there is a single shaft in the rocker area with 4 cam lobes (1 for each cyl). Each cam presses down on the gas intake valve. The that activates the cam shaft is connected via linkages to the lever on the left side of the tractor. Don't see how they got rusty with all the oil around them. The thing about the gas start diesels I don't like is, you've got all the headaches of gas engine anyway. And its doubtful if they could start directly on diesel.
