jd 2010 problem

i will be looking at a JD 2010 gas burner this weekend. i talked to the owner over the phone. it will not fire and start, although he said it will start some of the time, but sputters and dies after a few minutes. he thinks it may be the carb. this is very limited info, but what are some of the possibilites that i might look for. could a blown head gasket, bad gas,bad air filter be the problem. i may have to post again after the visit.any and all help is appreciated.
