Don LC gives the straight scoop. That's the way my 2N with a 6V coil has been operating for quite some time. On the other hand, if you do have a 12v coil, you may still need a resistor (just not the same value). And the resistor (if needed) can still go between the ignition switch and the top of the coil -- as Don said, it doesn't matter where it goes as long as it's somewhere in the circui. While some 12V coils may not need a resistor, every one that I've seen for the 9N/2N/8N front-mount distributor does. If the coil isn't built to handle the full voltage developed by the alternator on a 12V system, one of the symptoms will be that the points don't last (the other symptom can be the coil overheating -- and even cracking open).
