Back in 1950 my uncle bought a new IH loader for his 1950 Farmall H, it was a Model 31 I believe, and it came with the lifting shoes you describe. While in theory the shoes will provide "break-away" lift advantage, and they do, they were a nuisance in straw laden manure(or is it manure laden straw),loading dirt and gravel, and we eventually took them off. Later versions of this loader didn't usually come with the shoes and scissor jack-like linkage. The shoes lifted more about 6-8 inches but then the lift stopped, the front wheels squished down some, and you couldn't lift higher or back up, even with double weights on the tractor rear wheels. Now with my Super M, this loader/tractor had a lot more capability and the shoes were never needed. These are just observations from my experience.
